Documentary Recommendations: Fashion & History

Hello My Loves

Today's post is a little bit different from my normal posts on fitness, fashion and beauty, but I felt so inspired and uplifted by the subjects over the weekend, that I wanted to share with all of you lovely readers.

Hubbie was working abroad and only flew home Saturday evening, so I had a bit more time on my hands than normal on Saturday afternoon.  So I put my 8 month pregnant feet up and watched two documentaries back to back with some glorious Lindt chocolate and a cup of tea on the side! Absolute heaven!

I love to watch documentaries but hubbie does not like them and is strictly a movie guy, so the times we do sit down to chill out in front of the television its normally a movie we watch.  So I soaked up every bit of getting to choose whatever the hell I wanted to watch! I chose two great documentaries;

1. Dior and I (Frederic Tcheng)

This movie is a must see for fashion lovers. It gives us an inside look into Raf Simons beginning his new job as Christian Dior's Creative Director.  He has eight weeks to produce and showcase his first haute couture collection.  It gives us a glimpse into the whole creative process, from the team of ateliers to the pressure and stress of it all coming together.

It truly is a fascinating look into what goes on behind the scenes with some of the most creative and visionary minds in the world of fashion today.  Raf and his team are at the top of their profession and you don't have to be a lover of fashion to appreciate their vision and creativity.

I remember watching the actual 2012 Dior Haute Couture Fashion Show that Raf is creating his collection for and just being blown away by it. I wont say anything more in case I ruin it for you!

2. Secrets of Chatsworth

Chatsworth in the UK, is one of the grandest British stately homes and estates.

I have a secret to share with you.  I am a total history nerd! My University Degree is in Politics and I adore history. I always have a history book on the go.  So this documentary was perfect for me. But you do not even have to be the history nerd that I am to enjoy it. If you like beautiful architecture and appreciate British stately homes and estates then you will love this.

The history of the house reads like a Jane Austin novel, full of love, deceit and intrigue.  The home and grounds are steeped in culture and includes the likes of the famous American family, The Kennedy's.

I loved hearing about the grand parties of the olden days, of the times when the house was alive with visitors and imagining all the scandalous events happening in the house.

Have you any documentary suggestions? I would love to hear them or to hear your feedback if you watch either of the two above.

Love, Mini

  5. Gosh, eight months pregnant - I'm excited for you! How interesting you have a degree in politics by the way and I love that you're also intrigued by history :) Thanks so much for bringing this post to my attention, it's nice to know my love for stately homes hasn't gone unnoticed ;)

    ps. I hope you have plenty more opportunities in the future to put your feet up and enjoy some documentaries without your husband flipping over to watch a film haha!

  28. These documentaries sound so interesting, really. I do remember Raf Simons' first haute couture runway show and I remember being blown-away, and the truth is, I was a bit reluctant to that collection as I've always been a Galliano fan in terms of creativity (and I sill am). Thanks for sharing this with uis and I hope you can watch (and recommend) more documentaries more often ;)
